Things turn surreal when a simple renovation job becomes a journey to another world to rescue their client from a trans-dimensional witch bent on revenge in this imaginative take on Grace Sherwood-the Witch of Pungo.。本片讲述了旅美画家凌晨光历经波折苦恋祖国的一生。晨光（慕思成 饰成年，钮承泽 饰少年）生于云南，自幼酷爱绘画，母亲（归亚蕾 饰）照顾病重的父亲。晨光结识了邻家女孩陈娟娟（柯素云 饰），两人情窦初开。此时，晨光的父亲病故，下葬后随母逃难，晨光便在寺庙中继续作画。抗战末期，晨光遇到了即将赴美的娟娟一家，后者邀他一同离开这没有希望的祖国，被他断然拒绝。此后，晨光遭中央军追杀，幸好遇到船工周氏父女才化险为夷，他与周绿娘（徐中菲 饰）一见钟情。但是，他继续着毅然加入了版画宣传队伍，支持青年学生的抗战游行。有一次虎口脱险，再次遭绿娘搭救，此时其父刚刚亡故百日，两人百感交集。晨光后来在一次逃亡中险些葬身汪洋，后辗转到了美国，作画为生，小有名气，开了画展。此时，绿娘也被接到美国，两人结为夫妻。听到中国解放的消息，晨光毫不犹豫带着身怀六甲的绿娘踏上了返回祖国的邮轮。在船上，绿娘临盆，产下一女，晨光为她取名星星……。
